Wormsloe State Historic Site
Wormsloe State Historic Site features a beautiful road surrounded by oak trees covered in Spanish moss. The lane leads to the ruins of the Wormsloe house. This estate was once the home of Noble Jones, a carpenter who was one of the first settlers to arrive in Georgia. The estate is open to the public, and visitors can see costumed interpreters putting on live events if they time their visit right. The museum features artifacts from the house, and if you want to explore outside, an interpretive nature trail runs from the ruins to the Colonial Life area where you’ll find the demonstrators.
The Savannah Waterfront
You can’t spend a weekend in Savannah without exploring the river waterfront. River Street was once a warehouse row, but it is now a beautiful area with cobblestone streets and thriving businesses in the restored warehouse buildings. There are over 70 shops, restaurants, and galleries along the waterfront. The hotels offer beautiful views of the water, and if you want to get out on the river, you can take a Savannah Riverboat Cruise.
Savannah Children’s Museum
If you have kids with you on your Savannah weekend trip, make sure to bring them to the Savannah Children’s Museum. It is entirely outside with dozens of exhibits and programs for kids. It sits in the Georgia State Railroad Museum with all kinds of activities designed for learning through play.
Take a Food Tour
Savannah is home to many excellent restaurants, and one of the best ways to experience the cuisine of the city is on a food tour. The Savannah Taste Experience offers two different tours. One takes you through the historic downtown area, and the other takes you outside of the city and over to the east side. Both tours have tastings at several different restaurants. The Coast Tour that goes through historic Savannah is a walking tour and takes about three hours. You’ll get to taste food from some of the best restaurants and specialty food stores, along with some of the city’s most notable eateries.
The University of Georgia Aquarium
Head to Skidaway Island near the downtown area to see all the marine exhibits at the University of Georgia Aquarium. Right now, the aquarium offers pre-scheduled small-group tours. These last for an hour and include a stop at the touch tank.
There is a lot to see and do in Savannah. it might be hard to see everything in just a weekend, but it will be fun to try.
